"What
is resiliency?" "How do people become
resilient?" "Can you teach resiliency?"
and "What does research tell us about how to
help people be resilient?" were some of the
questions posed by Neal Conan, host of the National
Public Radio Program "Talk of the Nation"
to Nan Henderson and other resiliency experts during
the July 16, 2002 program.
Ms.
Henderson, President of Resiliency In Action, has
been reviewing the research on human resiliency
and training and writing on the topic for the past
12 years. She emphasized the information about resiliency
detailed in The
Resiliency Quiz (on this web site), and
she explained how the resiliency-building actions
described in the Quiz have helped people recover
from the events of 9/11. Other program guests were
Social Work Professor David Miller, who shared his
personal resiliency journey as an African American
son of an unwed mother as well as his research on
resiliency in African American teenagers, and Edith
Grotberg, senior researcher on the International
Resilience Research Project, who discussed her finding
that resiliency is a human capacity across cultures.
Listeners
had the opportunity to call with questions or to
submit them by e-mail. Some discussed their own
process of resiliency; others asked questions related
to defining resiliency, resiliency programming,
and how to best teach resiliency.
